The famous chipmaker, Intel, and the mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia, have recently announced that their respective Moblin and Maemo mobile device OS will merge into a single operating system. The Linux-based platform, called MeeGo, is intended to run on various platforms, such as smartphones, tablets, netbooks or in-car entertainment systems. The Linux Foundation will be the one to host the new MeeGo and dedicated applications will be available through the Nokia Ovi Store and Intel AppUp Center. Such applications will be in development in Qt, building on the Moblin core OS and the feedback from Moblin’s users. Once an application is written, it could also be used on other operating systems, such as Symbian.

Specific information on the MeeGo is not yet unknown; despite this, users are promised to benefit from Internet, computing and communication capabilities, but also multitasking, multimedia or high-performance graphics playback. The partnership between Intel and Nokia dates from last May and MeeGo is its result. Since recently, it has been called the oFono project.

Moblin is a Linux-based OS, which runs on several smartphones and netbooks having Intel Atom CPUs. Maemo, on the other hand, is famous on Nokia’s N900 smartphone; the software’s sixth generation will probably be launched later this year.

The new MeeGo is expected to be released somewhere during the spring. Besides this, the first smartphones to run the platform will be available at a later time, in 2010.

Im a current user of the N900 and believe that Meegoo will be a great investment. I have a positive review on the Maemo OS running on the N900 which is by far the best OS I have delt with. Hopefully Nokia will update the N900 to Meegoo and use it as a platform for testing before the first true MeeGoo mobile deevice comes out. “Don’t let us Users die off with Maemo OS Nokia”
