The DVR maker and service provider has submitted a patent to USPTO for closed captioning of information to DVR users. The new technique is meant to use existing closed caption as well as Enhanced Television signalling (ETV) in order to deliver the service. TiVo would also give customers software able to automatically remove commercials from the time-shifted programs.

TiVo patent allows the company to synchronize both ETV (metadata that cable providers have recently integrated into their broadcast) and closed caption information and displays it using an interactive method. This includes, along with closed captioning text, a menu or sound effects and digital video. TiVo has also promised to provide more advanced features thanks to the new type of technology, such as marking parts of a program users find interesting to share them with other users who also have a similar device.

TiVo has already offered to the customers the possibility of viewing closed caption information. Viewers can also subscribe to a show or even order additional product information when they are watching commercials.

The new technology allows users to manually edit commercials out of recorded programs. Besides serving providers’ goals, the system could also benefit to the advertisers who would be able to replace some old commercials in recorded programs with more recent information.
