Sony’s XEL-1 is confronting slow demand

Sony intends to gradually stop shipping the company’s first OLED TV, the XEL-1, in Japan, the home country. Since the late 2007 debut and because of the slow rates of the 11-inch TV set, which has a price of $2,200, this is the company’s first move in what OLED TVs are concerned. Sales for the 11-inch set will continue, only during the near future, in the USA, in Canada and other countries.

Sony is still planning to manufacture OLED TVs, but the company has mentioned that a new model won’t be available this year, especially because of the company’s ongoing economic recovery.

The XEL-1 was intended to help diminishing OLED TVs manufacturing costs, through economies of scale. Even if the model helped the company to develop larger prototypes, the price hasn’t dropped since its launch. There is a growing great gap between the price of a standard LCD or plasma TV and the price of Sony’s ultra-thin OLED TV. Some of XEL-1’s advantages in what image quality is concerned have been negated because of the LED backlighting and the overall boosts to contrast ratios.
