Sandisk has announced the release of a new design that doubles the capacity of previous flash drives used in smartphones. The iNAND 64GB embedded memory only uses one chip. Moreover, it can be partitioned, with only one drive performing boot, operating system and storage functions. Simplification of smartphone design and lower power consumption are Sandisk’s main purposes.

The new flash drives include Sandisk’s 3-bit-per-cell technology, which is already being used in various systems. It may be possible to also use the more experimental 4-bit-per-cell memory, which has been released last year. A new die stack design seems to be the key for higher capacity.

These new drives have the same physical interface as that currently used in smartphone design, which is expected to speed deployment. Sandisk’s new chips will be produced in capacities ranging from 4GB to 64GB.
