ST-Ericsson and ARM, the well-known chipmakers, have recently announced their partnership; this way, the two teams will try to optimize the Android mobile OS for ST-Ericsson’s U8500 platform, which uses ARM Cortex-A9 dual core processor. The optimization is intended to provide top application performance and 120 hours of audio playback or 12 hours of full HD video playback, on a single battery charge. It seems that the partnership will release the code enhancements directly to the Android Open Source community.

The need for more powerful processors on mobile devices comes from the increased use of various smartphone applications and web browsing. The use of multiple cores makes the processor run at a reduced rate, offering the same level of performance provided by a fast single-core processor, by using less power.
