The start of MWC on the 15th of February was the perfect moment for Motorola to release its eighth Android smartphone. Its name is Cliq XT for the USA or Quench, for the rest of the world. It is the first smartphone to use the social networking-heavy MOTOBLUR interface, without having a hardware keyboard. As another special feature, the Cliq offers a large touchpad, being able to make scrolling easier, when the device is used one-handed.

Until recently, the device has been known by its codename: Zeppelin. The new Cliq is Android 1.5-based, but it will only have in-browser Flash Lite for limited support of certain animations, as well as a potentially faster on-screen keyboard from Swype. The device also benefits from a slightly unique hardware, carrying a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, a 3.1-inch touchscreen, 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi. Cliq will also ship with at least a 2GB microSD card.

Cliq XT has already been confirmed as being released with T-Mobile somewhere next month and it is rumored that Motorola’s new device will start shipping March 10th. Outside the US, the Quench will be available in a similar timeframe. Even if the prices are not yet known, it seems that the Cliq XT will have a similar price to that of the original Cliq.

WOW TMO puts Android on the map and Verizon and ATT get the best android phones first.
Don’t hold your breath on TMO getting a decent android phone anytime soon.
It looks like the HTC desire may be the next although as of now no firm date of a US release.
Oh well TMO’s competition keeps powering ahead.
Instead of DIRECTION tmobile pilots it’s ship with hope.
