Apple and Amazon to be challenged by LG’s e-reader

The e-book reader developed by LG is expected to directly compete with the iPad and Kindle, as KW Kim, the chief of the company for Middle East and Africa claimed. The features of the e-book reader were not explained, but it is meant to compete with Amazon and Apple. The e-book reader would most likely be available to ship by April.

Being one of the world’s largest display manufacturers, LG is expected to exploit its research of e-paper and other screen technologies to get a competitive edge. It is unlikely to use the recently shown off, large and flexible e-paper, but it has also been developing colour e-paper and other similar techniques. The company is also believed to support Apple, as it received a very large order for the 9.7-inch LCD of the iPad, as claimed by Emirates Business.

Traditionally, Korean companies were reticent to adopt e-book readers, as LG and Samsung have only this year mentioned their intentions to seriously compete in this domain. Most of these devices come from countries like Japan and China and also from the United States and Europe.

LG’s official also denied that LG was trying to conclude a deal with certain carriers to offer subsidized 3G netbooks based on “Google’s operating system”. Whether this would imply Chrome OS or Android was not specified, although Chrome OS is more likely because it is specifically designed for conventionally-shaped notebooks.
