Kateeva, a relative new entry on the flat panel TV market, has some audacious plans for the future: the company wants to use a new technology to make OLED HDTVs cheaper than LCD counterparts. According to Kateeva’s executives, OLED TVs could be priced at only 60 percent of a comparably sized LCD panel’s price, thanks to a new printing technology developed by the company. A prototype printer already exists and it is being tested at the moment, alongside the related process. This could produce screens on an area sized almost 71×59 inches, which means displays of about 90 inches.

Kateeva’s technology will most probably be tested in 2011. Despite the expensive production technology, in comparison to LCD TVs, OLED panels are known for their improvement in what image quality is concerned, flexibility, efficiency and also weight. Sony’s 11-inch XEL-1 OLED TV is the first example, being priced at $2,500. What is very interesting, Kateeva is now almost sure that it could reduce the production cost for this type of panels.
