United Kingdom-based cable provider Sky will launch the first 3D TV channel in April. The first live sport event that will be shown on Sky 3D will be a soccer match between Arsenal and Manchester United. The hardware needed to play the 3D broadcast will equip only nine pubs in towns like London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Dublin. One Sky Sports broadcast with eight 3D camera setups will be dedicated to the 3D live coverage of this sport event.

The usual 2D feed of this game will be filmed by another broadcast. Hundreds of other pubs in the United Kingdom will be added the 3D channel in April and will be able to receive televised soccer games. The 3D technology is brought into homes from big TV firms like Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic. Sky+HD customers will also be able to watch 3D programs. Currently, the only missing pieces are TVs and 3D glasses, as Sky+HD set-top boxes are already able to receive 3D programs. Moreover, 3D broadcasts will be free for Sky+HD customers.

Sony promised, late last year, to cover another event in 3D, the FIFA finals.
