Foxconn is expected to make ready a WAPI-based iPhone model intended for China Unicom, the PCPOP Chinese site claims. WAPI is a local wireless standard compatible with Wi-Fi, which is not the case with the current iPhone model missing Wi-Fi due to governmental regulations. In fact, the missing Wi-Fi functionality is considered to be the main factor determining the modest distribution figures following the iPhone release in China. The carrier has sold 300,000 iPhones by the end of last year, 5,000 devices being sold during the launch weekend.

Many customers have purchased the standard version of the iPhone imported from abroad, instead of buying the official Chinese model, which costs at least $1,025. Both pricing and launch information remain unknown for the WAPI version of the iPhone.
