OWC (Other World Computing) has released its first range of solid state devices that it considers the fastest and the mot reliable 2.5-inch SATA SSD in the industry. The Mercury Extreme Enterprise SSD can be purchased in three sizes, capacities varying up to 200GB, and is compatible with either PCs or Macs. Thanks to the newer SandForce processor, the SSDs are believed to keep their optimal read and write speeds at 260Mbps with 0.1ms latency.
The enterprise-grade drive works at up to the full speed of 3Gbps as the SATA II and uses Error Correction Code. It also uses SandForce’s RAISE technology in order to avoid corruption and expand the lifespan of the flash memory cells. The smallest model, the 50GB Mercury Extreme Enterprise SSD, has a price of $230. The 100GB model costs $400, while the 200GB version has a price of $780.
