Super Talent has rolled out a new series of solid-state drives meant to help those users having very high workloads. Running on a high-speed controller from SandForce delivering a peak read speed of 250Mbps, the new device will be named TeraDrive FT2. What is impressive is that this peak read speed is promised for the device’s lifetime, while most similar devices have losses of performance in time and cannot manage to maintain acceptable speeds without software improvements, as seeking times are longer and longer.
The 2.5-inch SATA III drives have all adequate techniques to maintain the proper functioning of their flash cells and have an average time of one million hours between two successive failures. Customers can choose between MLC (multi-level cell) versions, that are shorter-lived, and longer-lasting SLC (single-level cell) cells.
Both SLC and MLC drives are available in 50GB and 100GB capacities. MLC are also available in 200GB versions. Prices have not been mentioned, but the mass production of the SSDs is expected to start in March.
