Sales prediction for 2010: tens of millions of tablets

Predictions say that 2010 will be the year of the tablets, thanks to impressive releases, according to a long-term estimation by Deloitte. The expected Apple tablet supposed to be launched on January 27th and the eventual launch of the HP slate should promote this category of devices, which includes Internet-aware and touch-only devices that are larger than smartphones but smaller than netbooks. Authors like Paul Lee anticipate a total of $1 billion in sales, which would eclipse the GPS market.

This ambitious projection is sustained by the fact that a tablet is a device that fills a key niche. Poor battery life and performance as well as wireless speeds have prevented the tablets from occupying an important position on the market, although demands for such devices have existed. Technology has lately caught up to where customers have wanted to arrive.

The future will say if Lee’s prediction proves accurate. Efforts that Microsoft has made to impose the Tablet PC to the public were unsuccessful and the devices were only accepted in specific industries, such as warehouses and doctors. The HP slate would take a different route than Apple’s tablet as it would use Windows 7, while Apple’s hardware would have a more limited and optimized version of the iPhone platform.
