Political fight could delay Chinese Android phones

The launch of a pair of Android phones was postponed by Google due to the political dispute it has with China. Tensions determined by the Chinese government supposed hacking into US-based servers as well as the anti-censorship response of Google has lead to the latter’s decision of cancelling the release of new Motorola and Android phones. The launch would be rescheduled but no exact date is known.

There was no official reason for the delay, but Google seems trying to prevent the controversy over e-mail intrusion from tarnishing the phone’s launch. A “positive experience” Google would want is not likely to happen if the current climate persists.

Although the phones are not named, the Motorola device is likely the XT701, which is the Chinese version of the MOTOROI.

Google has a significant presence in the smartphone business in China. Besides shipping devices like the Dell Mini 3i, it also ships phones that run Open Mobile System, a government-backed version of Android, found on China Unicom handsets like the Lenovo O1. Google could be forced to leave for political pressure reasons and therefore all these are put into doubt.
