Intel is expected to release soon the Classmate PC netbook series updated with its Pine Trail Atom processors. The chips are more efficient and quicker, but the netbooks will also be redesigned, beginning with the Convertible Classmate netbook, 10.1-inch sized. The goal is to make them lighter while keeping them robust enough to resist to dropping and other shocks provoked by schoolchildren.

The new Atom processor is 60 percent smaller than the replaced predecessor and is consuming 20 percent less power. Intel is also adding 3G mobile broadband and WiMAX to the netbooks. It also intends to release some Convertible Classmate versions with larger screens.

Intel has offered the Classmate PC as a reference design for other manufacturers in developing countries to produce low-cost computers. Competitors are present and One Laptop Per Child XO-1 is only one of them.

A version of the Intel Classmate PC is made by CTL and includes some of the above mentioned updates. The 2go E101S is based on the 1.66GHz Atom processor and has a 10.1-inch screen as well as a spill-resistant keyboard. The 2goPC QW6A is a new netbook with a larger 11.6-inch screen and features a Pentium dual-core processor. The 2goPC TW9 is a full-size notebook with a 15.6-inch LED-backlit display with either Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processors.
