The VIERA G2 and S2 series are the new ranges of high definition TVs announced by Panasonic in Japan.

The G2 series have image quality nearly a third better than the G1 range, with a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, thanks to the new PDP Black panel. The TVs also have built-in sensors and an automatic image adjustment capability that changes the brightness and the temperature characteristics of the display depending on the room’s ambient light. They have three HDMI inputs and a D4 input too, three composites, an S-video as well as four RCA audio pairs. There is also a VGA input and Ethernet is provided.

The S2 series have a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio as they lack the new Panasonic panel. However, they are 10 percent more efficient than their predecessors, thanks to a more efficient panel. Compared to the G2 series, they also lack the VGA input as a connection option.

The new series of Panasonic HDTVs have 1,080-pixel resolutions and SD memory card slots available to allow users view AVCHD video materials captured by their camcorders, as well as JPG photos. Thanks to the Ethernet ports they can connect to web-based video services like acTVila. The size is also variable as the G2 range includes three 42-inch TV sets with black, silver or brown bezels and also 46- and 50-inch sets, while the S2 range involves only two sets, one at 42 inches and the other one at 46 inches.

The G2 and S2 TVs will begin shipping on February 5th in Japan. The price for the 42-inch G2 is the equivalent of $2,400, while its S2 counterpart will sell at about $2,100. The 46-inch G2 will be $2,870 and the 50-inch G2 will have a price of $3,530. The 46-inch S2 is priced at the equivalent of $2,540.
