Verizon to provide simplified phone plans

Unnamed sources reveal that Verizon is aggressively chasing customers by providing a simpler and perhaps cheaper structure of its cellular phone plans. It will probably have plans similar to other carriers, that include basic Talk and Talk + Text with options for either 450, 900 or unlimited number of minutes. This structure is expected to be simpler and more efficient.

This strategy will still keep Verizon’s regular voice more expensive than, for example, AT&T’s but would also be less expensive than the majority of the others when using unlimited voice and text services. When messaging is included, this could mean about $40 per month. Family plans could be even cheaper, as a typical two-line plan could save about $80 no matter if with or without messages.

There will also be a change for prepaid plans and include a prepaid, contract-free monthly plan for $95, providing unlimited voice and messaging.

Verizon is expected, as part of its new strategy, to require information for more advanced non-smartphone devices in order to make the service more affordable. A $10 monthly plan providing 25MB of general data and separate e-mail traffic is expected. The overage fees are also expected to go lower, from 50 cents to 20 cents per extra megabyte. Smartphones will still keep a $30 unlimited data plan on top of voice.

The reasons behind the changes adopted by Verizon are not explicitly stated, but the importance of better value in high-end plans is believed to increase the average revenue per subscriber by offering incentives for those who adopt better handsets or farther-reaching plans. Verizon is known as having some of the most loyal customers but also as usually being the company with lower-end devices, while AT&T and other companies are lately focusing on smartphones.
