“Second layers” for 3G this year are planned by AT&T

AT&T began to ramp up its plans for the 3G network in a quite newer direction by adding an earliest “second layer” to its Atlanta service. This gives a second node to each of about 90 cell sites in the area and also helps balance the data load on the network, especially during the peak hours when the actual node would normally be fully loaded. A certain level of duplication for Atlanta already exists but it is now more comprehensive.

The roll out had begun form the technical point of view with some Florida deployments during November and December 2009. It is now heading towards a more national level, according to sources from the company. A timetable for the complete roll out of the upgrades as well as the cities involved was not made available yet.

The current AT&T expansion is considered a second wave beyond what happened in 2009. Last year, most of its efforts were concentrated on adding the 850MHz frequency in key areas, on expanding the amount of the available bandwidth and on improving the capacity of the existing nodes. The expansion is a direct response to the pressure the iPhone put on the network, due to its heavy data traffic, which made 3G data often become unusable in certain large cities like New York City and San Francisco.
