Clear, the US WiMAX operator, is supposed to release soon two new modems with features that are not to be found in its current offerings. The ATA capability which allows for VoIP calls without needing supplementary hardware is now integrated.
The first modem will come from the Taiwanese Gemtek and has an omni-directional antenna. The price will always be $80 after a $10 rebate as for all the other modems that have a Clear plan. Users also can lease the modem for $5 per month. The device will only be available in Las Vegas, at least for the beginning.
The second modem is from Motorola and comes in the form of the WiMAX CPEi 725. It sports a high gain omni-directional antenna, as well as data and voice ports. It also has integrated QoS features to get better VoIP and data performance. The modem will cost $80 as usual and have the option of a $5 per month lease and will be available only in Portland.
It is still unknown if the modems will ship and when. There is also a lack of information regarding other potential markets than those listed above.
