Microsoft may use the Mobile World Congress in February to present an early look at what is considered to be the next-generation operating system for mobile devices, according to an unnamed source, which mentions that the company’s decision is final but an opportunity like the above mentioned event is expected. A release date for the operating system is not mentioned, but, according to the tradition, it would be ready in spring and handsets using it would arrive a few months later, in summer or fall.

An unveiling of the Windows Mobile 7 would contradict in part the interim existence of the 6.6 version that would be meant to fill the gap and keep alive the Windows Mobile for another delay. There are unconfirmed rumours about a push back to 2011 for unknown reasons.

Windows Mobile 7 is considered to be a major improvement of the operating system not seen since the 5.0 version and would include, apart Internet Explorer 7 Mobile, a new gaming interface and a media interface, at least, borrowed from the Zune. Capacitive touch would be scheduled to show up in the 6.6 version, while full multi-touch would appear together with the new release.

It is known that delays in releasing Windows versions have lead some companies like Palm and Motorola towards new operating systems. Even the most loyal to Windows, such as LG and HTC, are now expecting Android-based devices to constitute the majority of their line-ups in 2010.
