Volcano, the all-in-one home video convergence device combining major characteristics of TiVo, Slingbox/HAVA and Roku internet video into a single package was presented at CES. It supports video streaming as well as recording to smartphones. Users can schedule and then record TV channels remotely to the system’s hard drive by using their mobile phone through Wi-Fi or 3G connections. The scheduled channels can be viewed simultaneously on the smartphone or they may be transferred and stored for a later use.
When used at home, Volcano can be controlled with either the smartphone or the remote control and can be used as a TiVo DVR. There are additional features that include support for browsing the web and watching YouTube videos or other kind of supported online media services, including CinemaNow. Volcano can handle up to 802.11n Wi-Fi locally.
The device is available in two versions, a regular and a pro one. The regular model is priced at $200 and has 4GB of flash memory, while the pro version has a 250GB hard drive and costs $300. Both of them are expected to be released in March.
