Gateway was present at CES with the launch of two new notebooks from the EC series, both of them running Intel’s CULV platform.
The EC14D is the first Consumer Ultra Low Voltage system of Gateway to sport its own DVD burner. Slightly thicker at one end and heavier, weighing 3.55lbs instead of 3.08lbs, the drive is considered the ideal option for travellers and college students who might either watch DVD movies or burn discs of their own. The EC14D has a feature set similar to the next step down in the series carrying a 1.3GHz Pentium and 4GB of RAM, an 11.6-inch display and running Windows 7 Home Premium. Gateway has equipped it with a 320GB hard drive instead of the 500GB drive of its closest DVD-free models in order to keep price low. The notebook should be available before the end of January for a price of $630.
The model above it, the EC 58, is the largest in the line and features a 15.6-inch display that almost makes it a desktop replacement. It also sports a DVD drive thanks to the extra physical space and has got a performance upgrade as it has a 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor and a 500GB hard drive added to the EC14D’s specifications. Shipping date is similar to that of the EC14D and the price will be $800.
