New F Series and Z Series of VAIO notebooks based on Intel Core i5 and i7 platforms were introduced at CES by Sony.

The design for the 13-inch Z Series is extremely light and attractive, weighing less than 3 lbs as its frame is made in machined aluminium and carbon fiber. The new notebook sports backlit keys and a keyboard design closely matching Apple’s aluminium MacBooks. Despite the small size, the Z Series notebook is available with a possible choice between Intel’s Core i5 and Core i7 processors. A 1,600×900 resolution display matching a 13-inch footprint has LED backlighting allows the screen to keep being vibrant and clear even when under the intense lights of the Convention Center in Las Vegas.

The possibility of switching off the NVIDIA’s 9300M GS graphics components to save power is similar to a feature of some high-end MacBooks. However, unlike the Mac systems, users are not constrained to log out when trying to switch modes. Another option to initiate the dedicated graphics automatically when additional acceleration is needed is provided by a switch.

The F Series is Sony’s entrance into gaming and multimedia notebooks. It is based on Intel’s Core i7 and features a 16.4-inch 1,920×1,080-pixel resolution for the high-end version, while the resolution is 1,600×900-pixel for the entry level. The GeForce GT 330M or 320M graphics from NVIDIA control the graphics acceleration. Power is provided for about three hours. The F Series is large enough for its 6.9 lbs. As many users are accustomed with centered keyboards, the offset layout presented by Sony might seem inconvenient. Instead of keeping the empty space on both sides, a numerical keypad is integrated into the right side.

Shipping date for the Z Series is scheduled sometime in April and the starting price is $1,900. As for the F Series, the price for a basic configuration is $1,000 and the system is already available.
