Hearst has provided new details of its self-produced e-book reader, named Skiff Reader. This is one of the largest e-book devices with an 11.5-inch screen and providing a 1,200×1,600 touchscreen, which could be suited to newspapers and magazines. It also uses a rather new e-paper, which consists in an LG-made flexible steel foil, resistant to shattering, instead of glass. The extra size of the screen allowed Hearst to make the reader slimmer, slightly over a quarter of an inch, in spite of providing a remarkable long battery life of over a week. Connectivity will be provided by Sprint in its 3G network to download books and subscriptions inside the United States, while users travelling abroad or beyond Sprint’s coverage will be able to connect through Wi-Fi.

The Skiff Reader is one of the first e-book devices explicitly made for the Skiff format, which provides more visual and cross-platform texts. There is no defined ship date for the reader, but it will be found in Sprint’s retail network when released, later this year.
