The third generation netbook was confirmed by Toshiba with an official event. Both the NB300 and the NB305 sport the Pine Trail-based 1.66GHz Atom from Intel and provide an extension of their battery life from nine hours to eleven hours. Although they have a longer life, the six-cell batteries did not increase either the size of the netbooks or their weight that is now 2.6 pounds. There also is an increase in hard drive space, which is now 250GB. Windows 7-oriented applications from recent netbooks of Toshiba also include some items like a Media Controller application to use the “play to” streaming feature of Windows, a bulletin board and the ReelTime application, which provides a way of finding data represented as a timeline.

Following Toshiba’s strategy for the NB200 series, the NB300 uses a conventional keyboard and comes only in black casing at a price of $350. The NB305 uses a “chiclet” keyboard and comes in a two-tone scheme that uses both silver and a separate colour for the lid. Both models are expected to be available soon.
