An unspecified product is planned to be unveiled by Apple in January. Financial Times reveals that Apple would prepare an announcement for next month and although there is no information about this event, the newspaper speculates that it could be related to the often-rumoured tablet that could finally appear. Until deciding to opt out for 2010, the Mac designer has frequently used Macworld San Francisco to unveil new hardware and software, and this usually has happened in January. Lately, new versions of iWork and iLife were involved, but also major revisions to previously made computers, as well as entirely new made products, such as the MacBook Air or the iPhone. Apple has constantly declined its participation to CES or other events of its kind and usually organizes its own.

A January launch of the tablet is to be doubted as previous rumours indicated a possible release in March, and others said that mass production of the device would begin in February. If built-in 3G is a reality, Apple may opt for an early launch in order to prevent the FCC from unveiling its plans just as in the case of the iPhone release. This year, however, Apple was successful in avoiding the publishing of data about the iPhone 3GS just made available.

Regarding the TV strategy, the same sources reveal that Viacom and TBS from Time Warner are not yet convinced to accept Apple’s proposal. Resistance to a flat-rate iTunes TV plan from studios like Comcast’s NBC and Time Warner, which are partnered with cable or satellite networks, could occur, due to fears about many customers dropping their cable TV services in favour of the more portable and cheaper alternative.

Apple has also contacted, as leaks say, unnamed book publisher “sector executives” for its tablet. As Apple hopes to use the large screen of the tablet for reading in addition to watching video, running applications and browsing the web, the device seems to be e-book focused.
