BlackBerry’s outages – the third wave

BlackBerry users, definitely not very fortunate lately, have reported another malfunction that affects the BlackBerry Information Service. The failure is broader than the mail-related delay already reported and also affects now the web browsing, BlackBerry Messenger and the third-party applications using Internet access. Research in Motion, even if contacted, has not commented this phenomenon. This represents the third failure within weeks and is coming in a very inadequate moment, as Research in Motion is expecting to have strong sales in order to successfully compete with the iPhone, which could come very close to BlackBerry’s sales, as some analysts estimate.

Research in Motion’s system has often been criticized many times for its very centralized way of passing many messages and other data through its servers. This technique is the key to the push e-mail delivery of BlackBerry but has generated multiple outages, especially for individual customers who do not use a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Other important competitors, like iPhone and Android, have service-independent push that depends on using widespread standards, such as IMAP to deliver near real-time mail.
