The most frequently used phone for connecting online in 2009 was the iPhone 3G, according to a report from Nielsen. In the United States, about 4 percent of cell phone owners have used Apple’s phone to get online in the period starting in January and ending in October. The iPhone 3G was selling by itself until June and then as a $99 model when the iPhone 3GS became available. Its lead over the BlackBerry Curve 8300 was slight, RIM’s phone controlling 3.7 percent of the market, but the third ranked was well behind the iPhone, the old Motorola RAZR V3 having only 2.3 percent of the market.

As a brand, Apple is not the first ranked, as LG, largely used by Verizon, has got 6.4 percent of the market through phones like Dare, Voyager and V2. BlackBerry’s Storm with 1.4 percent and Pearl with 1.2 percent have leaded the smartphones of Research in Motion in second place with 6.3 percent of the sphere. There is a difference between single- and multiple-model and a very good example is that of Apple. The iPhone has often saved AT&T from declining of its volume of sales, but this exclusivity has obviously hurt Apple’s standing. Research in Motion and LG, which have phones on all four carriers, are less affected by reduced demand in one carrier thanks to greater popularity in the others.
