Magellan, the navigation device and related peripherals manufacturer, has launched the pre-order command for its Premium Car Kit for iPhone and iPod Touch. The company has also announced that the device will be shipping starting January 10th, 2010. The new kit is composed of a windshield mount with an own integrated GPS sensor, through which original 2G iPhones and iPod Touch devices could use the navigation function. For 3G and 3GS iPhone versions, it seems that the external GPS chip has been improved, allowing better reception of Apple’s devices.

A car charger and a dedicated button used for answering and ending calls coming through the iPhone’s Bluetooth connection are also included. Apple devices don’t have to be removed from cases; Magellan offers a perfect solution: the mount is adjustable.

Magellan RoadMate 2010 North America (the official name of the navigation application) is available as a standalone application, priced at $60, at the App Store. This application is also included in the kit.

Magellan’s Premium Car Kit price is $130.

As everyone has commented, absurdly expensive for what you are getting. Add in the obligatory app and you are at $200. Can get some pretty darn good stand alone GPS units for much less than that. Zero brain marketing. At $75 for this and $35-40 for the app they would still make a ton of money. Especially with the free Google app looming. Just is a dumb price point that will annoy people enough not to buy. Certainly me.
