More than 50 percent of Acer handsets for next year will use Android

A leak claims that more than 50 percent of the 8 or probably 10 smartphones scheduled by Acer to be released next year will not use Windows Mobile, but Android. The company has acknowledged that the mix of operating systems will be more balanced towards Android that has equipped only one phone in 2009. Next year will see a changed situation, as the majority of the phones will be Android-based. Three of them, at least, are planned to be entry-level models supporting 3G and others will have fast Snapdragon processors from Qualcomm. This information was not commented by Acer.

If the rumour is true, the move would be another symbolic stroke for Microsoft, which has been losing terrain for Windows Mobile as the platform is aging and is abandoned in favour of some more modern software. Palm’s decision to leave Windows Mobile for its own long planned webOS, while other companies like Motorola, HTC, Sony Ericsson and Samsung have decreased the use of Windows Mobile replacing it with Android or even other platforms. Motorola, for example, has completely replaced Windows Mobile at least until Windows Mobile 7 would be in place in late next year.

Acer will make more Android phones and less Windows Mobile phones. Why would anyone still want one of the old Windows Mobile phones, knowing the precarious situation that operating system is now in.
