Rogers has recently announced that it intends to extend one of its promos, which offers free tethering. Even if this deal was scheduled to cease at the end of 2009, its duration will now be until May 3rd, 2010. It will be applied, as known, to any Rogers or Fido smartphone data plan including at least 1GB of bandwidth; this refers to various devices, including iPhone, Android smartphones and any other phone allowing 3G connection share with a PC.

An official explanation for this move has not been made public by any of the representatives.

Bell and Telus have begun offering tethering for Apple’s iPhone and many other HSPA-capable smartphones, so Rogers’s extension could be a response to that. Another explanation could be the rise of WIND Mobile, which offers unlimited data in its 3G areas, even if the company hasn’t mentioned if the unlimited access includes tethering as well; Rogers could try and stop this competition.
