Korean company Cowon has launched a new portable high definition media player, the V5 HD, a device that features a 4.8-inch 800×480-pixel resolution touchscreen, but capable to output 720-pixel high definition video thanks to an HDMI output. It also has an integrated DMB TV tuner and can support H.264 as well as other common HD-ready formats. Standard definition video can be output to external displays by means of a proprietary composite video cable. An SD memory card slot can be used to upgrade memory. The Windows CE 6.0 device will enable multimedia playback as well as surfing the web through its Wi-Fi connection. The battery life of the V5 HD media player is able to play 45 hours of audio or 10 hours of video playback, according to specifications. The device can be used as a digital photo frame, thanks to applications. There also is Flash support and several applications, such as calculator, notepad, world clock, RSS reader, converter and others.
The V5 HD will be available in three versions, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. Shipping will begin in South Korea on January 1st and the price for the 8GB version will be the equivalent of $253. A United States release is probable but there is no information about the date.
