Mobile device data points to double before 2014

ABI Research estimates that the number of annually shipped mobile devices should powerfully double within the next five years. It seems that about 1.2 billion phones, media players, modems and netbooks will be shipped this year and, moreover, the analysts say that the numbers will most likely jump to 2.25 billion by the year 2014.

The growth will surely be felt in all areas, except for the cellphones. Even if smartphones are more and more popular, the entire area seems to have saturated enough to grow with only almost 4%. Modems (i.e. 3G adapters) are believed to grow at approximate 40% each year; in the meantime, “ultra mobile devices”, such as media players and mobile Internet devices (MIDs) will probably grow with about 67% annually. Even if these devices currently have a small market share, they may grow spectacular, since cellular carriers are starting to make non-traditional data plans.

Most of the providers, including almost all of the carriers in North America, are usually subsidizing netbooks and it is possible that they will try the same strategy with tablet devices.
