According to recent data fro StatCounter, it seems that the most popular single version of a web browser is Firefox 3.5, which has surpassed Internet Explorer 7. During the last week of measurements, Mozilla’s browser has had 21.93% of traffic, just a little over Internet Explorer 7, which has had only 21.2%. In what overall market share is concerned, Microsoft still has an advantage, even if IE8’s data points are growing at a bit slower rate than Firefox.

Safari 4 has almost maintained an overall of 3.03%, even if its data points have been slightly growing during recent weeks. Opera has had 0.42%. These, together with other browsers, have reached a collective 9%, but individually didn’t have enough of the market share to count each as a single entity.

Firefox’s rise doesn’t seem to have an explanation, but it can be assumed that this has happened thanks to the browser’s better speed, compatibility and cross-OS support, including Linux and Mac OS X; Internet Explorer only uses a comparatively old web engine, being limited to Windows PCs. The total market share of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is credited to corporate computers and older systems from the developing world (many PCs here run the preinstalled Internet Explorer version, which came along with Windows XP or Vista).

EU browser ballot intends to give a helping hand to Firefox and other web browsers, trying to offer Firefox as an option to those who wouldn’t have tried an alternative, in normal conditions.
