Super Bowl commercials for the Droid?

Motorola is supposed to run a Super Bowl commercial dedicated to the Droid, that it has already bought, according to some leaks. The ad in question, although not confirmed yet, would run on the company’s flagship, the Droid, probably the most heavily promoted handset. We have to remember the campaign with numerous ads from Verizon, that were attacking the iPhone and outlining the Droid’s features compared to its rival. Neither Verizon nor Motorola has commented on the topic, although Verizon normally would not deal with promo spots.

By running this commercial, Motorola would be the only manufacturer of electronics promoting one of its products during the Super Bowl, while other technology companies confirmed to run ads are online businesses, such as HomeAway and GoDaddy. Pepsi did not confirm to run any promos for the main brand and would consequently rule out anyone of the online music store commercials it has already run in the past, such as with Amazon and Apple.

Motorola, in the history, has promoted the PEBL, RAZR and other phone lines during the game. Apple instead has never run a Super Bowl promo for the iPhone, because it has always been reticent to utilize Super Bowl ads. Apart from the early “Lemmings” and “1984” ads, Apple has only run one ad of its own in 1999 and has cooperated with Pepsi on an iTunes commercial for the 2004 edition of the Super Bowl.
