There was an original idea that Skype could only be used while being at home. People could use VoIP services with their computers or purchase dedicated phones to do that. However, users are more interested in Skype service on their mobile phones and if iPhone users are already able to do it, Symbian users will join the club too in the near future, as Skype has announced the creation of the service for Symbian and a beta version available for this purpose. This will be a free application bringing Skype features to Symbian devices, like the Nokia E71 for example.

The beta version of Skype for Symbian will provide free Skype-to-Skype phone calls, phone calls made with Skype credits and calls received on the user’s online number. Instant messages and group conversations, as well as file sharing will also be possible.

The service will work with both 3G and Wi-Fi connections, the latter being preferable to save money. The announced beta version of the Skype will be available for Symbian S60 third Edition FP1 and FP2 handsets. This includes the N96, E63 and 6220 Navigator devices. The full release of the beta version of the Skype for Symbian will happen in the beginning of 2010.
