LG announces the thinnest LCD panel up to date

LG Display has recently presented the thinnest LCD panel for a TV in the world, as the company has stated. The panel (42-inch) is only 0.1 inches thick (that makes 2.6mm) and also uses an edge-lit LED backlight, a new optical film and other revolutionary techniques. Despite its dimensions, it can produce a native 1080p resolution, supporting a 120Hz refresh rate, which increases detail and, in the same time, reduces blurring in fast action video.

The new panel is 50 percent thinner than the 5.9mm panel presented by LG somewhere in May 2009. LG claims that a TV built around this LCD, which weighs less than 8.8 pounds (4kg), could easily be mounted on the wall, thanks to its thickness and lightness.

At CES, LG will show private demos of this panel, but it is still a mystery if some TVs based on this panel will be released during that period or if LG is planning to launch them sometime in late 2010.
