Research in Motion has recently confirmed a widespread failure in the e-mail system, that produced major postpones. A BIS (BlackBerry Information Service) outage is the cause of delayed e-mails for individual users at most North American carriers. Representatives from the company said that the problem is identified but there is no timeframe yet for the problem to be fixed.
Businesses using a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that operates partially independently of Research in Motion’s main e-mail system are not necessarily affected by the problem. These are currently representing less than half of the active user base of RIM, but the majority of users were left without messages.
Verizon subscribers report, on the company’s forums, that the web browsers on their phones have lost all but Bing search options. This way, users were not allowed to search Google or other sites without browsing to the particular website. This change shows up a month after Verizon’s deal with Microsoft to use search through Bing, but it is not clear if the move is a tentative to force customers to use a single search engine. Verizon has not commented any aspect of the problem.
Both failures come in a bad moment for RIM, which is supplying the latest quarterly results and depends on strong sales to balance iPhone 3GS sales. RIM has strongly depended on deals with many carriers to strengthen its market share and, consequently, has had to relinquish control of its branding and operating system.
