ASUS has planned to build an educational robot addressed to kids, that would run on the Android open-source operating system. The robot will be named EeeBot and the project will be sponsored by the government of Taiwan in order to promote Android. A governmental website describes the EeeBot as being an affordable robot, with hardware and software entirely designed and produced by ASUS. The cost of the development of the EeeBot will be partially subsidized by services and content related to the robot, to make it affordable for families. The EeeBot will provide human robot interaction technology (HRI), voice and visual recognition, as well as navigation capabilities. The timelines of the project show that, once the project will be finalized, it would take about two years to ASUS to start building the trial production runs of the robot. The program will have an annual output value of $155 million for the next four years, according to the company’s assertions.

Android is already supporting multiple applications outside the original intended area of smartphones, and now includes netbooks, home entertainment devices and e-book readers, such as the Nook. The EeeBot will be the latest product of the Eee-branded series from ASUS, including the Eee PC netbooks, the Eee Box, the Eee keyboard and the Eee Top.
