On December 17, 2009, Research In Motion has declared that the company has had one of its best quarters in the history, thanks to a sheer expansion. RIM says to have shipped about 10.1 million BlackBerries in three months, from September through November, surpassing the previous 8.3-million record, 4.4 million of them being new to BlackBerry. The company’s active accounts have been pushed to about 36 million. During the company’s history, about 75 million BlackBerries have been shipped.
As a result of the sales, RIM’s fiscal results have also been high during this quarter: the net income has jumped over 32% compared to last year, to $628.4 million and pure revenue has reached $3.92 billion, having surged over 11%.
RIM claims that sales expansion is due to the release of its most important phone, during this quarter. This includes the Bold 9700, Curve 8530 and Storm2. The expansion is also credited to the release of previous mobile phones on a wider range of carriers.
The company doesn’t hesitate to make some predictions and claims that it 10.6 million BlackBerries are expected to ship before the end of February, with a net income going quickly up to 48 or 58 percent and the company’s revenue, to 7.1 up to 12.2 percent.
RIM is a relative newcomer to the smartphones market and the first in this category to ship more than 10 million mobile devices in a single quarter; this makes the competition against its close rival, Apple, tougher. Apple has been closely trailing RIM during this summer, by shipping 7.4 million mobile phones. Some specialists wouldn’t have expected more than 8 million or, the maximum, 9 million shipments. Despite this, some sources were considering that Apple could ship more than 10 million iPhones.
