People can now add a supplementary HDMI, DVI or VGA display to their Macs, thanks to the new USB 2.0 Display Adapter, launched recently by NewerTech. One extra screen is allowed per each adapter, with a maximum resolution of 2048×1152. The number of permitted adapters varies according to the OS used; this makes a maximum of four adapters for Macs and six, for Windows-running computers.
The device, which is bus-powered, allows cloning and extended desktop modes. VGA and HDMI monitors can be connected using a secondary adapter, which is included in the package. Unfortunately, OpenGL acceleration is not supported; this means that applications that need Quartz Extreme, Quartz Composer or related frameworks are not fully compatible. These applications include Keynote, iPhoto and iMovie. The adapter is compatible with at least Mac OS X 10.4.11 or Windows 2000 SP4/XP SP2 and is available at OWC, being priced at $96.
