FCC wants some answers from Verizon, but gives them some extra time

Verizon has gained some extra time to definitive an explanation concerning the new structure of fees for early terminated contracts, thanks to the FCC. The Commission is paying a lot of attention to the reasons why Verizon has doubled the ETF amount for smartphones and all “advanced devices”, in their opinion.

Until recently, Verizon has been applying a $175 ETF for all of its devices, with no exception, but has raised the sum to $350 for smartphones. Critics say that these fees are meant to keep the customers loyal to the carrier for a longer period of time, but carriers contradict them and say that fees represent a must in order to cover the subsidization costs associated with expensive and luxurious mobile devices.

Verizon has to give some explanations for the $2 web connection fee which is usually added to bills, even if we’re talking about accidental key-presses. Subscribers have complained a lot about this, as they usually don’t realize pressing the VZ Navigator button, which leads to a charge, even when the application is exited before using any of the services.

The FCC has asked Verizon to give the explanations until the end of December 17, 2009, but the Commission has added three more days to the deadline.
