Google’s Nexus One subsidized at last?

Most recent leaks suggest that the Nexus One would not be an unsubsidized and unlocked model. Reuters claims, citing unidentified sources, that T-Mobile will finally discount the Android phone for those customers who want to sign up for a contract. The phone would also sell through Google’s website directly and would be available on January 5th, just in time for CES.

Officially branding the Nexus One as Google’s own phone, instead of launching it as a regular HTC device, could present the risk of troubling HTC’s competitors, which would certainly consider this move as favouring one Google partner and could probably divide the Android community. The winning aspect of this move could however be that of a first Android truly integrated handset, with Google as a hardware and software designer at the same time.

A major complaint of the Android operating system was that of poor hardware design or sometimes excessive changes in the interface that could dramatically hurt the experience. Apple and Research in Motion have undoubtedly significant shares and impact on the smartphone market thanks to the above mentioned approach. Veterans of the industry, like Microsoft and Symbian, which don’t develop their own hardware, are in decline for this reason.

Its a perfect fit. T Mobile and Nexus Cell Phone. T Mobile runs the same technology as AT&T and users can run apps, talk and mail all at once just like iPhones can. Google owes it to T Mobile to work with them as they are a driver of Android along with HTC.
    Great site. Bookmarked

I’m not sure I agree that Microsoft and Symbian are in decline *because* they don’t design the hardware their software runs on. I think they’re in decline because they simply don’t offer the features that Apple RIM and Google are offering.
