Verizon is now testing a new type of fiber optic network based on the FiOS service that may boost the internet speed. The service is called XG-PON and it proved it can reach a download speed of 10Gbps compared to the 2.5Gbps existing now and a 2.4Gbps upload speed almost double as the existing 1.24Gbps.

The test showed that both of the networks can work in the same house providing a speed of 12.5Gbps by simple combining them.

The company warns us that the technology is not going to be finished until the middle of 2010 and that these speeds are going to be first available on local networks with some restrictions. Anyway the larger speeds will create services for customers up to 200Mbps and will enhance the video experience with videos at a higher quality than the HD format. The service will also provide new experiences for users.
