McDonald’s to offer free Internet access in the near future

McDonald’s has recently confirmed that its customers will soon benefit from free Wi-Fi hotspots. The company will drop the $3 fee for two-hour of Internet use somewhere in the middle of January, as its desire is to transform the stores into places where clients are encouraged to stay for a longer period and use their personal notebooks and smartphones. There will also be a change in the menu, which will now focus on coffees and desserts, which in normal conditions wouldn’t represent a meal by themselves.

The free Internet access will make the competition between McDonald’s and some coffee chains, such as Starbucks, tougher. Many of these are already offering free access or charge similar amounts, in order to attract clients to their locations. The change could also affect AT&T, as the company provides Internet access to both McDonald’s and Starbucks and has so far obtained profit thanks to frequent visitors.
