Sprint has confirmed in a Twitter update that the HTC Hero and the Samsung Moment running on its network would be updated to Android 2.1. Both of them are currently running Android 1.5. The upgrade would take place in the first half of the next year, although there is no strictly planned time frame.

The Android 2 is currently only available on Verizon’s Motorola Droid and comes with major improvements including a new browser HTML5-based, an expanded camera and keyboard characteristics to make 3D games fully operable. It also provides some features supported only by devices running Android 1.6 or 2.0, such as Google Maps navigation turn-by-turn GPS.

i wanted to know, if you already have a htc hero will it automatically upgrade to android 2.1 or do you have to buy a new one?

  2. Droid Dizzy says:

@Chris it will be an over the air update most likely. They will send it to your hero. They did this with my Motorola Droid

I imagine it will come in an update form, you will probably be prompted to backup all of your information and then the update will download and then install and then the phone will restart with the new OS.

This is how it should work, you will not have to buy a new phone.

@ Chris – you can go to settings > about phone > system updates > firmware update to check manually..
when sprint released the patch for 1.5 i just happened to check manually because my friends with androids were bragging about their turn-by-turn google navi..

i am a lil’ upset about this 1st qtr release because the initial reports i caught said the update would be avail before Christmas.

For those who need it, you can download a version of 2.1 for the hero online.. it’s been avail for quite some time. i think it voids your warranty and there were some initial reports of bugs (like any other firmware update really), etc..
