On December 14, 2009, Synaptics presented a concept mobile phone design which offers special input methods, far beyond touchscreens. The device, designed by both TheAlloy and The Astonishing Tribe, is code named The Fuse and has a multi-touch capacitive display, as well as a grip and side touch sensors, which easily feel when the user squeezes the phone or touches it elsewhere than the screen. The concept phone seems to also have basic touch control on its back, providing control without blocking the display.

The touch input comes along with vibration feedback manufactured by Immersion, as well as with an accelerometer recognizing every tilt and 3D for the whole interface, not just for some applications, like for other phones. It also benefits from a rather fast Texas Instruments OMAP 3630 processor, which is based on ARM Cortex-A8 architecture, the same as for iPhone 3GS.

The Fuse will most certainly be presented at CES. Even if the concept won’t become reality, as it is only thought of as a reference platform, some or all of its technology will probably be produced as hardware.
