ZyXEL has claimed to offer the first 4G router for the Long Term Evolution standard (LTE). The ZLR-2070S can connect at speeds up to 50Mbps downstream and serve a local network through either 802.11n Wi-Fi or its four-port Ethernet switch. It is considered an ideal alternative to the wired services for those providers who either cannot or prefer to avoid running a traditional landline service.
The router will have a USB port to be utilized for sharing an external drive or a printer across the local network. It will also have DLNA support for sharing media between similar devices like Sony’s PS3 and some computer applications.
It is not known yet when the router will be available, but it is almost sure that it will be available through carriers rather than as a stand-alone device. Telus, Bell and Verizon will be the first North American carriers to switch on LTE in 2010. AT&T, T-Mobile and Rogers, as well as other smaller carriers will follow in 2011.
